Solid Waste Reduction
With the cooperation of the Reginald F. Lewis High School staff and students, we were able to begin a successful solid waste reduction program throughout the school. Students, and I as their mentor, collect the recycle bins that have been strategically placed in every classroom and office every Monday in preparation for pickup at the school on Tuesday morning. We were tasked with determining the process for becoming a recycling pickup site as well as where to locate tools and equipment required to begin and successfully continue recycling through the length of the school year. We have been fortunate to be able to fill two large recycle bins completely each week so far and plan to continue increasing each week.
In addition to our recycling efforts, RFL holds campus clean-ups to maintain the cleanliness of our school's grounds. Great support has come from our sports teams, other clubs, and our general student and staff population. Having students join together to clean the waste around the school gives them a realization of the impact that littering makes.
