Community Active in the School
Baltimore Orchard Project
Every Thursday, the Baltimore Orchard Project joins our Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources classes to work with the students on various greening activities. Students have taken initiative and planted two apple trees and an Asian pear tree in the courtyard, right outside of their Agriculture classroom. Other activities include lessons on animal habitats, conservation, sustainability, planting practices, and healthy eating. Students are learning hands-on and thoroughly enjoy the opportunities provided.

Phoenix Wildlife Center
Walter Massey, the program coordinator at the Phoenix Wildlife Center, dedicated his morning to our students. In December 2016, he educated our Animal Science and Environmental Science classes of rescue alternatives for wild animals, handling techniques, habitats, diet, and temperaments of a wide variety of locally-found species. Many of the students had not seen the animals before or even knew they were native to our Baltimore high school. With the visitors including an owl, snakes, turtles, and spiders, students got a hands-on educational experience that they can educate others on.

Hungry Harvest
On Mondays after school, students earned service learning hours by volunteering with the Hungry Harvest group. With the guidance of the Agriculture mentor teacher and community outreach supervisor, students led the sale and education of produce to the school community. From 3-6 pm, RFL opened their doors to the surrounding neighborhoods to offer discount produce in the local food desert. This mutually beneficial relationship was not only educational, but it promoted healthy eating practices.
