Habitat Restoration
Taking Flight with Monarchs
The Agriculture department at RFL partners with the ESOL department to create butterfly gardens in the courtyard during the Spring semester, 2017. By planting milkweed plants and nectar sources, and creating an ideal environment for the butterflies, students will learn the habitat of the local butterflies, their purpose, and what their diet consists of. Students will later see how the Monarchs year-long migration goes across the United States and will learn tagging techniques to keep track of the butterfly's whereabouts.

Courtyard Orchard Project
The Introduction to Agriculture courses and RFL are engaged in an orchard creation project in the courtyard at school. Throughout this project, they have been gardening in the courtyard and have already planted apple and Asian pear trees. With these trees growing and the students' continually 'growing' knowledge on local wildlife in the area, the courtyard will soon be restored to be a safe place for birds and other animals to create a home. "The Baltimore Orchard Project strengthens communities through planting and cultivating orchards, teaching neighbors to be long-term stewards, and sharing the harvest among us all." Ponds being installed in the later Spring, 2017, can be a luxurious place for frogs and other aquatic life to reside.
